Tennis great Andre Agassi has admitted he tested positive for hard drugs during his career and lied to sporting authorities to escape a ban. Reports said that Agassi, one of the world’s greatest tennis players with eight Grand Slam titles, reveals in his autobiography to testing positive for the highly addictive drug crystal methamphetamine. The champion, now 39, also says that he has always secretly hated playing tennis and lived in fear of his bad-tempered and violent father.

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009The United States Federal Reserve Chairman has called on China to ask consumers to spend more and to help address the trade imbalances that contributed to the financial tsunami. He also said the United States should reduce the budget deficit in the long term. Days before the Chairman’s remarks at a conference in California, the US government reported a US $1.42 trillion deficit for the budget year that ended on September 30.
Activists demand help for the poor
Sunday, October 18th, 2009About 100 people have staged a protest outside the Central Government Offices, calling for measures to alleviate poverty in the territory. The protestors said the Chief Executive, Donald Tsang, had ignored the needs of the poor in his policy address on Wednesday. Sze Lai-shan, the spokeswoman for the Society for Community Organisation, said working class people would not find much employment in the so-called six pillar industries the government planned to develop. She said they would be of greater benefit to professionals and the middle class.

Mid-Levels flat sells for HK$439m
Wednesday, October 14th, 2009Henderson Land has sold a duplex in Mid-Levels for HK$439 million. This made the 6,100-square-foot unit on Conduit Road one of the most expensive flats in the world – at more than HK$71,000 per square foot. The developer sold another duplex in the same building for just under HK$400 million. The Chief Executive, Donald Tsang, said officials would closely monitor market changes in the coming months. But he clarified that he wasn’t concerned about overheating in the luxury market.

Personality plays part in heart attacks

It found a third of heart disease patients in Hong Kong are more likely to have a heart attack or die if they have what’s called a Type D personality – meaning they’re more anxious, pessimistic and hostile.
Mainland censors approve Jackson film
Tuesday, October 6th, 2009The Michael Jackson documentary, “This Is It”, has snapped up one of the last of China’s 20 annual foreign movie import slots. A Sony Pictures executive says the Chinese censors approved the film before the weeklong National Day holiday, clearing it in time for its global release on October 28. Sony Pictures says it’ll give the movie as wide a release as possible because of Michael Jackson’s big fan base in China.
